How to create your own Photo Calendar

You may think you have to wait until December to create a personalized calendar, but this is not the case. Many companies (including Whitewall, who we’ve used for this creative project) enable you to start making your own photo calendar at any time of year.

When it comes to composing your own photo calendar, the trick is to spend time gathering up the best images from your collection. You’ll also need to consider the size of the calendar, the paper type and any final touches. We opted for a less fussy finish that lets the images speak for themselves, and a high-quality paper. It’s worth paying the extra money for a premium product – after all, you’re going to have to look at it for a whole year!

There are many options and different settings that Whitewall has to offer, and we’ll only touch on a couple of them. You can always save your calendar (via the top navigation bar) and return to working on it later if you don’t want to do it in one go.

Step 1

Start by collating your photos. Label them according to which month you would like each to represent. This part requires some careful consideration. We used Adobe Bridge to help us see how the images would work as a set.

Step 2

Go to Whitewall and click the blue Start Designing button. From here, you can select the style you want for your calendar (we went for Classic White) as well as the size, the paper quality and the month you’d like your calendar to begin.

Step 3

Once you’ve chosen the size of your calendar (ours measured 21 x 21cm) you can create your front cover. We made a grid of all the images using Photoshop. The easiest way to do this is to create a new document, import each image, and arrange them.

Step 4

Next, return to Whitewall in your web browser and import all of your images. To do this, click on the big green + Add Photos button and either drag and drop them in or click on the Computer button and import. Make sure they are JPEGs. They’ll appear in the left-hand side of your Whitewall page as image thumbnails.

Step 5

Click on the Cover icon (bottom navigation bar) then drag the bottom of the image box to the full size of the page. Go to the thumbnail icon of your front cover and drag it into this box. Work your way through each month (use the navigation bar to scroll through), dropping in the correct images. We left the images the same size as the template for each month.

Step 6

Finally, add the final changes. For example, on the front cover we used the Ellipse setting to add a yellow circle with the text ‘Calendar June 2017 to May 2018’. Once you’re happy with the layout, preview your calendar via the top navigation bar and you’re ready to place your order, get it delivered, and display it proudly in your home!
